Sprained Ankle, Knee Scooter, and a Santa Fe Wedding—How It All Went Down
Sprained Ankle, Knee Scooter, and a Santa Fe Wedding—How It All Went Down
So Thursday evening, during a family photo session in El Paso at Memorial Park, I gracefully sprained my ankle tripping over a turtle statue (yes, that turtle statue). Lesson learned: no more wearing chanclas to sessions. Luckily, my incredible clients—who happened to be nurses—had me iced and wrapped in no time. Literal lifesavers.
The real panic set in when I remembered… I had a wedding to photograph that Saturday in Española, New Mexico, just outside of Santa Fe. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to deliver the experience my couple deserved. So I called up my amazing second shooter Abby in Albuquerque, and she was down to help—thank goodness!
With a solid ankle brace from Walmart and a rented knee scooter courtesy of my brother, I hit the road to Santa Fe with my husband (a.k.a. MVP and gear hauler). I wasn’t sure how I’d manage the ceremony without disrupting it scooting between the pews, so I limped my way through most of the day—but once I had a camera in hand, I powered through.
From the Catholic church ceremony in Española to portraits in the New Mexico sand, we captured some truly beautiful moments. My second shooter covered angles I couldn’t reach, helped round up the bridal party, and made the day run smoothly. I even managed to rest and recharge at the hotel before the reception kicked off.
Was it easy? No. But with the help of ibuprofen, great support, and adrenaline from doing what I love, I was able to document a magical day for an amazing couple.
3 Takeaways for My Fellow Photographers (or the clumsy ones like me):
See a doctor right away—don’t tough it out like I did.
Have a great team you trust to back you up.
Wear supportive shoes (your feet will thank you).
